2008 Medical Sciences Research Program Stipends

First year medical students, whether interested in the College of Medicine Honors Research Track or not, are invited to apply for a stipend that will support them during a 10-week individual research experience during the summer of 2008.  For summer 2008 stipends will be available from an NIH T35 Training Grant, an American Heart Association Training Grant, and from the Lawrence M. Goodman trust.  Stipends will range from $4,000 to $5,000, depending upon the funding source.

Research will be performed with a U.F. Health Science Center faculty member, and may be basic science, clinical science, translational or epidemiological studies.  Applications from students who are new to research or from students who have performed research prior to their entry into medical school will receive equal consideration.

Selection of Faculty Mentors:

Students should decide on the research area that they are interested in and then directly contact faculty within that area to determine their availability as mentors and what projects are available. Resources that are available to help the students decide on a research area/mentor are:

·         COM Departments and Research centers web page
http://www.med.ufl.edu/research/com_research_centers.shtml

·         MSRP Research Mentors and Projects page
http://msrp.med.ufl.edu/restrackmentors.shtml

If you need help in selecting a research mentor, contact Dr. Colin Sumners (csumners@ufl.edu) to arrange a meeting during which we can discuss possible projects and mentors.

Application Procedures:

·         The application form is available as a Word document.  Research Stipend Application Form 2008

·         Complete all sections of the application form. It is expected that the student will write the application in consultation with their mentor.

·         Submit the completed application form via email to Nichole Stafford (anh323@ufl.edu). In addition, a signed hard copy of your application must be delivered to Mrs. Stafford at Room L4-185, McKnight Brain Institute.

·         The final deadline for applications is Friday April 4, 2008. Applications will not be accepted after this date.

·         The MSRP committee will review your application and will notify you of their decision soon after.

Requirements/Participation:

·         Students must each commit to 40 hrs of research activity per week for 10 weeks.

·         Students are required to attend an MSRP seminar series (6 seminars total) on the Responsible Conduct of Research.

·         Students cannot receive concurrent funding from another research stipend or Fellowship.

·         Students must write and submit a progress report upon completion of their research experience.

In addition to the above individual research experiences at U.F COM, there will be a limited number of stipends available to support a research trip to Cuzco, Peru.  This is the continuation of a group research effort that has been ongoing for the past 3 summers.
